Note that in the tertiary structure
at the left the blue positive charge appears to be delocalized
compared to the other structures, yet we can
not draw a resonance structure to explain
this. The answer lies in
the ability of adjacent C-H sigma bonds (the sp2-1s bond)
to donate some electron density in the adjacent empty p
orbital, an event described as hyperconjugation.
